Josep Queralt i Clapés and Marcel·lí Antich i Camprubí founded Edicions Proa in Badalona in 1928 with the guidance of Joan Puig i Ferreter. Its publishing was interrupted by the Civil War, although prior to the outbreak of the conflict the publishing house had created several literary and essay collections, including the emblematic A Tot Vent.
In 1951, in the midst of the post-war period, Proa was revived in Perpignan, once again with Josep Queralt, and it continued the A Tot Vent collection. In 1964, it moved to Barcelona. One year earlier, Joan Baptista Cendrós i Carbonell had purchased the publishing house from Josep Queralt, who died in 1965. With Proa headquartered in Barcelona, in the hands of Cendrós and under the literary direction of Joan Oliver, the company embarked upon a significant expansion. It promoted A Tot Vent and created other collections, including Els Llibres de l’Óssa Menor, from which the Premi Carles Riba poetry prize emerged. In the late 1960s, sales began to drop and economic hardships led it to be folded into the Fundació Enciclopèdia Catalana in 1982, until it joined Edicions 62, which was already part of the Grup Planeta and the Grup Enciclopèdia.
The names found in the catalogue reflect the quality of Proa and include world-class poets, storytellers, novelists and essayists, both local and international.
Led by “A Tot Vent”, Proa grouped its output into different collections, most of them fiction.
