Doré, Gustave, 1832-1883

Gustave Doré (Strasbourg, 1832 - Paris, 1883). French artist and illustrator of great international acclaim. He started his career at a very young age and at the age of 15 years he had his first exhibition. He travelled to several countries and lived in Barcelona for a number of months. He worked in the publishing industry, and created high-quality illustrations for works by iconic authors such as Dante and Cervantes. In 1872, he published the book, London: a pilgrimage that caused controversy by highlighting the poverty in London.

His published work is held in several institutions, some of which provide digital access.
