Mario Vargas Llosa (Arequipa, Peru, 1936) is an internationally renowned novelist, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. He began his career as a journalist in Peru, but in 1958 he won a scholarship that allowed him to settle in Madrid where he undertook a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the Complutense University of Madrid. Later he lived in other European cities such as Paris, London and Barcelona. When he returned to Lima, he devoted himself to politics. As a writer, he enjoyed his first success with his novel, La Ciudad y los Perros (The Time of the Hero) (1962). Vargas Llosa won several awards including the Prince of Asturias award (1986), Planeta (1993) and Cervantes (1994), in addition to the Nobel Prize for Literature. Among his work, La guerra del fin del mundo (The War at the End of the World), stands out.
