Mercè Rodoreda i Gurguí (Barcelona, 1908 - Girona, 1983) is considered one of the most influential writers of contemporary Catalan literature. Her works are translated into around thirty languages and cover all genres. Her first work, Sóc una dona honorada?, was published in 1932, but the works that earned great literary recognition were Aloma (1938), La plaça del Diamant (1962) and Mirall trencat (1974). Characterised by her use of mainly female characters, Mercè Rodoreda was awarded the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes in 1980. She died in Girona, after three decades of exile.
