Josep Puig i Cadafalch (Mataró, 1867-Barcelona, 1956) was a Catalan architect, politician and art historian. In the political sphere he is recognised for his work as a city councillor in Barcelona, member of the Spanish Parliament and President of the Commonwealth of Catalonia between 1917 and 1924. As an architect, Puig i Cadafalch is the creator of two jewels of Barcelona modernism: Casa Amatller and Casa de les Punxes. In the field of ancient and medieval Catalan art he developed the basis for their study and established the criteria for restoration of monuments. Puig i Cadafalch participated in numerous scientific activities, in addition to being president of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (Institute of Catalan Studies) from 1942 to 1950. He was awarded an honorary doctorate doctor honoris causa by several international universities.
The Josep Puig i Cadafalch collection is in the National Archive of Catalonia, with documents relating to his work as an archaeologist and historian as well as other unpublished papers.
