Victor Hugo (Besançon, 1802 - Paris, 1885) was one of the most famous French authors of the Romantic period. He was a poet, playwright and writer. He tenaciously defended his political ideas to such an extent that he was sent into exile in Brussels during the Second French Empire (1852-1870). His extensive work is characterised by these ideas and reflects social struggle. His best-known works are Les Misérables (1862) and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1831).
