Àngel Guimerà i Jorge (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, 1845 - Barcelona, 1924) in addition to writing poetry and dedicating himself to politics, he was also one of the most prolific Catalan playwrights. He was one of the most prominent figures of the Catalan Renaixença. Some of his works enjoyed international success, such as Mar i Cel (1888) which was translated into 8 languages. He was the president of the Lliga de Catalunya (League of Catalonia) from 1889, the same year he also chaired the Floral Games. Among his best-known works include Gal·la Placídia (1879), Maria Rosa (1894) and Terra baixa (1896).
