Pompeu Fabra i Poch (Vila de Gràcia, 1868 - Prada de Conflent, 1948). Self-taught linguist. He studied Industrial Engineering but his vocation was always the study and standardisation of Catalan. Known as the "seny ordenador de la llengua catalana" (roughly meaning the "wise order-maker of the Catalan language"), he produced key works in the recovery of Catalan language and literature, such as Normes ortogràfiques, Gramàtica catalana and the Diccionari general de la llengua catalana.
He participated in the First International Congress of the Catalan Language and was part of L’Avenç. He was a Full Professor at the University of Barcelona and a founding member of the Philology Department of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (Institute of Catalan Studies) where he was also President. In 1939, he went into exile in France where he received many honours.
Among others, the handwritten pages of the dictionary can be viewed at the IEC Espai Pompeu Fabra.
