Lluís Domènech i Montaner (Barcelona, 1850-1923). Architect, designer, historian and politician. One of the main figures of Catalan modernism and one of the promoters of political Catalan nationalism with the Lliga Regionalista (Regionalist League). He was a Full Professor at the Escola d'Arquitectura (School of Architecture) in Barcelona. He taught students including, Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch o Josep Maria Jujol. He contributed to publications such as La Renaixença, Revista de Catalunya, La veu de Catalunya and El poble català and he published numerous books, as well as technical works and political essays.
He was Director of the Biblioteca de artes y letras (Arts Library) at the publishers, Domènech, his family business for whom he designed many book covers. The headquarters of the publishers, Montaner i Simón, was one of the first modernist buildings in Barcelona to be constructed by the architect, under whose direction Montanter i Simón published the spectacular Historia general del arte. Two of his best-known works, the Palau de la Música Catalana (Palace of Catalan Music) and the Hospital de Sant Pau, have been World Heritage Sites since 1997.
