Capmany, Maria Aurèlia, 1918-1991

Maria Aurèlia Capmany i Farnés (Barcelona, 1918-1991). Novelist, playwright, essayist and politician. Granddaughter of the writer and folklorist, Sebastian Farnés, and daughter of folklorist, Aureli Capmany. She graduated in Philosophy at the University of Barcelona. Her work not only includes novels and plays, but collections of essays, children's stories, translations from French and Italian, newspaper articles and comedy, radio and television scripts. She is known for being a cultural activist and a feminist. She was actively involved in the anti-Franco movement, Socialism of Catalan nationalism. Along with Ricard Salvat, she founded the Escola d'Art Dramàtic Adrià Gual (Adrià Gual School of Dramatic Art). She was a councillor for Barcelona City Council and a member of the Provincial Government of Barcelona.

Among other awards, she received the Premi Joanot Martorell in 1948 with El cel no és transparent and the Sant Jordi prize for novels in 1968 with Un lloc entre els morts. In 1982, she was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi (Saint George's Cross) by the Generalitat  (Government of Catalonia).
