Jane Austen (Steventon, 1775- Winshester, England, 1817). English novelist. Her works have become classics of English fiction and have worldwide recognition. Her novels are characterised by her indirect use of irony and the way she avoided the traditional style of Romantic writers of the time. Austen used to publish her work anonymously. Her most famous works are Sense and Sensibility (1812) and Pride and Prejudice (1813).
