Hans Christian Andersen (Odense, 1805 - Copenhagen, 1875). Danish writer. From humble beginnings, he soon fled to Copenhagen where he scraped by until he managed to find some of the country's important names to undertake his education. Although he wrote novels, poetry, theatre and travel books, Andersen is known mainly for his fairy tales, some of which are inspired by Nordic fables or legends, but most are the fruit of his imagination. His stories have been translated into many languages, making them children´s literature classics. The Ugly Duckling, The Steadfast Tin Soldier and The Little Mermaid are some of his most famous stories.
