Fita, Fidel, 1836-1917

Fidel Fita i Colomer (Arenys de Mar, 1835 - Madrid, 1918). Archaeologist, epigrapher, linguist and historian. In 1844 he entered the seminary in Barcelona and in 1850 he became a member of the Society of Jesus. He taught Humanities, Greek, Latin, French, English, Oriental languages and Holy Scripture. He carried out historical, archaeological, epigraphical and linguistic studies. He contributed to various religious and historical journals and wrote many books and hundreds of scientific articles.

He was Director of the Real Academia de la Historia (Royal Academy of History) and was part of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts), the Reial Acadèmia de les Bones Lletres (Royal Academy of Fine Arts) and many European archaeological institutions. He received the Creu de Carlos III (Cross of Carlos III) and the Creu d'Alfonso XII (Cross of Alfonso XII).
