Coromines, Joan, 1905-1997

Joan Coromines i Vigneaux (Barcelona, 1905- Pineda de Mar, 1997). A renowned Catalan linguist and one of the leading specialists in Romance linguistics. His works, Diccionario crítico etimológico de la lengua castellana (1954-1957), Diccionari etimològic i complementari de la llengua catalana (1980-1991), and the Onomasticon Cataloniae (1989-1997) represent an exceptional intellectual legacy. His professional career earned him several awards, including the Premi Lletra d'Or (1972), the Medalla d’Or from the Generalitat of Catalonia (1980) the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (1984) and the Premi Nacional de les Lletres Espanyoles (1989), among others. His legacy is held at the in the Fundació Pere Coromines, which was founded in the year he died.
