Brossa, Joan, 1919-1998

(Updated 04/01/2021)

Joan Brossa i Cuervo (Barcelona, 1919-1998) was a poet, playwright and visual artist. One of the founders of the Dau al Set artistic group (1948). Brossa recognised no boundaries between the various artistic genres and he would combine them, advocating an interdisciplinary approach to culture and the arts. He was one of the first proponents of visual poetry in Catalan literature.

From the sixties, his theatrical works were known internationally (thanks to Suite bufa and Concert irregular) and he enjoyed much public recognition in the seventies and eighties.

In 1999, he created the Fundació Joan Brossa (Joan Brossa Foundation) which held his private archive of around 52,000 documents. However, these documents were moved to the Centre d’Estudis i Documentació MACBA (MACBA Study Centre) in 2012.
