Palau i Fabre, Josep, 1917-2008

Josep Palau i Fabre (Barcelona, 1917-2008) was a Catalan poet and art critic, specialising in works by Picasso. He studied Philosophy at the University of Barcelona and it was the editor, Josep Janes, who introduced him into literary circles. In 1944 he founded the magazine Poesia and two years later, the publisher La Sirena. He was also involved in the founding of the magazine Ariel. In 1945 he went to Paris where he lived until the late sixties. There he met various painters, but most notably Pablo Picasso, and thus wrote the book Vides de Picasso (1947), as well as several analyses and reviews of his artistic work. He left an intellectual legacy of many works of literary criticism. His career was recognised with several awards including the Lletra d'Or (1998) and the Premi d'Honor de les Lletres Catalanes (1999).
